After successfully holding the role as the president of G20 in 2022, Indonesia is now taking the position as the chairman of Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN). After successful reign as the president of G20, the expectation will be quite high for Indonesia to lead the club of the South-East Asian.After receiving the hammer from previous Chairman, Cambodia, in Phnom Penh, President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo stated that, “Indonesia is honored to be the Chair of ASEAN in 2023. The chairmanship of Indonesia will adopt the theme ‘ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth.He expected that ASEAN to become a fast-growing, inclusive, and sustainable economic region. Furthermore, ASEAN must be a stable and peaceful region and become an anchor for global stability as well as enforce international law consistently and remain neutral.Despite the big ambitions and hope for success, Indonesia faces many challenges in leading the association. First of all is Myanmar situation. The crisis will likely steal most of the spotlight throughout ASEAN’s 2023 political-security agenda. Thus, regional stability can be alternative achievable objective.Uncoincidentally, Indonesia’s G20 presidency and ASEAN Chairmanship are processing alongside the ongoing conflict, both in Myanmar and in Europe. After five days of deadlock, the King finally swore in Anwar Ibrahim, leader of the Pakatan Harapan (the Alliance of Hope – PH) coalition as the 10th prime minister of Malaysia.After appointed as PM without winning a majority vote, Anwar Ibrahim first challenge is to create a unity government with other parties to provide PH coalition with stronger power and more stable government. Second, Anwar has to make a bold move to actually show that he wants to bring a reform from previous government and assure the people with his cabinet decision.Anwar also face polarization after years of intense of politicization, national reconciliation with other coalitions might be needed to bring Malaysia more unite as a nation. Itaewon Tragedy Tested Yoon’s LeadershipYoon Suk-yeol is the new elected President of South Korea. The former Prosecutor General and lawyer serves as the President of South Korea since May 2022 replacing Moon Jae-In. Five months after Yoon took the office, South Korea face a major tragedy called Itaewon Tragedy.The tragedy which took event on 29th October claimed more than 150 lives. This event might become a test to Yoon’s leadership and presidency resilient against political attack from the opposition.The situation can be compared to the 2014’s Sewol tragedy in which 304 people die. At that time, the administration of Park Geun Hye respond to the tragedy very slowly resulted in the fall of public trust that never recover. In December 2016, Park was impeached from the office due to corruption case.Yoon and Park are from the same conservative party. Yoon’s respond toward the case shows that Yoon had learn from the Park’s failure. Yoon held emergency meeting to coordinate the crisis response before declaring one-week period of mourning. That night, people just enjoy their night around Legian – Kuta just like any other night. In the midst of the busy night of Legian Street, an explosion happened from inside Paddy’s Irish Bar.As people ran out in panic after the explosion in the bar, the second and bigger explosion happened through L300 van full of explosive materials that was parked in front of Sari Club instantly killing dozens of people. Minutes later, the third bomb exploded near the US Consulate in Denpasar City. The massive second van bomb eviscerated a large section of a commercial and residential neighbourhood in Kuta.The terror was masterminded by militant terrorist network JI (Jemaah Islamiyah) and in that one-night nightmare, there were 202 people killed and 209 others injured. In Nov 5, 2002, the first suspect was successfully captured. It was Amrozi also known as the smiling bomber as he showed lack of remorse after his evil action. Later on, Imam Samudra and Mukhlas also arrested. In 2008, all those 3 are shot dead by firing squad.After 20 years, the attack was claimed as the deadliest act of terrorism in the history of Indonesia. Do Not Forget 9/11September 11, 2001, Tuesday, people were doing their daily lives and some people were traveling by plane maybe for pleasure, to meet their family, or maybe for work. But workers and travelers were not the only ones who entered the plane on that day. There were also 19 terrorists under Al-Qaeda led by Osama Bin Laden.They soon hijacked the plane and killed stewardesses and pilots and ended-up killing around thousands innocent peoples. The hijacked planes were eventually crashed into World Trade Center, the tower that symbolize America’s economic power. A hijacked plane also crashed into Pentagon, the headquarter of U.S military. Another plane was directed into the White House but protected by its passengers and fell into an empty field.The attack on America was not an attack towards its economic power or even USA’s foreign policy. It was an attack towards the values of USA such as freedom of speech, human rights, and tolerance towards diversity.If by one in thousands chances that America fell to the hand of terrorists group, then there would be no other safe place on earth where freedom was guaranteed. More Aid for Productive Sector!The recent issue of the fuel price resulted in a lot of mass protests by students in many provinces in Indonesia and also protests from activists and civil societies. It is seen that the decreasing subsidy for fuel will give more financial burden for people, but will it?Previously during the reign of former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY), the fuel price was also increasing, and the subsidy was switched to education sector that resulted free education in primary school and junior school (now until high school).Government was planning that the subsidy should be spent for more important sector instead of consumption as the government aimed to increase the number of certified human resources, national literacy level, and national education level.The aid for consumptive item such as fuel is not a strategic spending from economic point of view. The government aid should be on more productive and fundamental sector such as education. Spending on strategic sector must be done especially under current situation when countries are recovering from the pandemic effect.Stimulation to economy and gearing more resilient human capital are way more important than fuel price.
