Yoon Suk-yeol is the new elected President of South Korea. The former Prosecutor General and lawyer serves as the President of South Korea since May 2022 replacing Moon Jae-In. Five months after Yoon took the office, South Korea face a major tragedy called Itaewon Tragedy.
The tragedy which took event on 29th October claimed more than 150 lives. This event might become a test to Yoon’s leadership and presidency resilient against political attack from the opposition.
The situation can be compared to the 2014’s Sewol tragedy in which 304 people die. At that time, the administration of Park Geun Hye respond to the tragedy very slowly resulted in the fall of public trust that never recover. In December 2016, Park was impeached from the office due to corruption case.
Yoon and Park are from the same conservative party. Yoon’s respond toward the case shows that Yoon had learn from the Park’s failure. Yoon held emergency meeting to coordinate the crisis response before declaring one-week period of mourning. Furthermore, Yoon also set-up a task force showing his level of openness and seriousness regarding the issue.
